Abstract:
This article presents a theoretical reflection on com-
municationmutationswithin a Culture of Contribution (PROULX,
2012a). It discusses concepts based on the empirical experience
of the Independent Media Center (CMI Brasil), a media collective
with a clearly defined political position and a proposal to offer
alternative and critical information to the public that contrib-
utes to the building of a free and equal society. The IMC com-
munication tools allow a deeper understanding of the digital ac-
tion developed on the basis of Information and Communication
Technologies, emphasizing potential changes in the production
of digital media in contemporary society. The article seeks to
give new contributions to the field of communication, highlight-
ing current issues related to the production, reception and circu-
lation of journalistic information, based on the Center’s experi-
ences in a Culture of Contribution. For that purpose, it presents
IMC’s communication strategies, its paradoxical empowerment
in the face of contemporary capitalism and the forms of appro-
priation its members use to make informational contributions.

ture of contribution, independent media.
